How To Store Your Skis Over The Summer

Cleaning your skis properly and putting them away somewhere cool and dry in a neutral position will help them stay intact over summer - ready for you to get them out again next winter!
How To Prepare Your Skis for Storage Over the Summer
Before you hide your skis away for another year, there are certain steps to take first:
Clean your skis
You need to make sure your skis are fully clean before you store them. Skis pick up a whole load of dirt and grime during the season so make sure to hose them down properly.
Be careful not to try and force water in the bindings. When cleaning your skis, opt for water or citrus solvent rather than degreasers or detergent which might impact the binding lubricant.
Sharpen the edges
Check the edges of your skis to make sure that they’re still sharp or that any base or edge damage is fixed.
This means that they’ll be more ready for you come next season and reduces the chance of them rusting over the summer.
Wax the ski bases
Use hot wax on the bases and then a softer wax to protect them from rusting over the summer months.
There’s no such thing as too much wax! So make sure to coat all over the bases and edges and don’t scrape it off so that they can stay protected while they’re in storage.
How To Protect Your Skis in Storage Over the Summer
First, loosely strap your skis together (base to base) and then they can be hung by the tips.
They can be stored lying down, on their side, or hung vertically by the tips. Leaning them against each other could warp them over time so take care not to do this.
Whatever position you choose, they should be in a neutral position and should not be covered by anything which could bend them or change their shape. Specifically, make sure there is no pressure on the brakes, rocker or camber.
Keeping skis in a ski bag during summer is a good way to protect them from dust and sunlight as well as any nicks or scratches. If doing this, avoid bags with any potential for moisture as they could hold water inside and end up rusting the edges of your skis.
The right ski bag will also make it easier for you when you’re back to the slopes and looking to transport your skis easily.
Storing Ski Boots for the Summer
When thinking about ski storage, don’t forget about your boots. These too should be properly cleaned and dried. To prepare ski boots for storage, they should be buckled loosely to preserve their shape.
This is also a good time to check the heels and toes for any damage so that you can fix it before your next trip to the slopes. The same goes for laces - use this time to check for wear and tear and see if you need to replace them before going away for storage for the summer.
Where to Store Your Skis Over the Summer?
To protect your skis during storage, it is recommended to find a cool, dry place out of the sun to store them. Garages could be problematic as they may hold too much moisture from the ground and the walls.
Another important factor in ski storage is temperature control. Skis should be protected from the heat and humidity of summer as this could damage the skis and cause them to lose their form. The heat also makes them more prone to rust.
Tight on space at home? You could outsource your storage for skis. After preparing them properly and binding them, perhaps inside a ski bag, you can then store this externally.
By-the-box companies like The Box Co. let you pay to store your skis - just paying for the size of the skis. The skis can be collected directly from your door and can be returned straight to you whenever you want ready for your next ski trip.

Storing Skis Until Next Winter
During ski storage, the space where you store them is hugely important for keeping them clean, dry and free from heat, moisture and damage.
Take the correct steps to clean them and prepare them for storage. When deciding the best location, choose a place that’s dry and clean, where they can be stored unobstructed by other items.
You could also use an external storage solution where you pay for just the skis to be stored in a safe storage unit where they can be stored safely until next season.
